CHAPTER FOURTEEN

CHAOS

Panic flares in Marea’s gaze, warring with the interest I spy sparkling there.

Too fast, Chaos. Slow down.

Just because her body is on board, doesn’t mean her heart and head are—yet. I’m a persistent man and will prove to my mate that we’re meant to be.

But only if I do it properly. There’s a formula for everything in life. To get the results I want, I need to experiment carefully.

Today’s learned lesson—slow and steady wins the race.

Given that I failed to learn the previous one, there’s a chance I’ll screw this up. The other lesson being, always detach my kotilo in Marea’s presence.

She affects me too much to keep the thing on and knowing that she wants me to fuck her with my barbels…

I’m doomed.

“Chaos?” Marea touches my arm, jerking me back to reality. “You’re mumbling—something about slow and steady?”

“Sorry, just thinking of an experiment I want to conduct. I already know the outcome, but I have to test it. This makes me want to speed everything up, so I was just reminding myself to slow down. This way.”

Marea accepts my answer, and we descend into the basement of the building where the labs are located.

Having them on a lower level adds another layer of security, since we house many of our suppressants and reproducers here.

When I show her the main room filled with sterile counters all lined with computers, Marea gasps.

“Is that an autoclave demulsifier?!”

Her face lights up brighter than the sun reflecting off the ocean when I nod, and she races over to the machine. I walk over and log in, waving her over.

“Go ahead and take a look. I’ll be right back.”

My mate sits down, instantly engrossed with the technology before her, as I make my way over to my office.

On my desk, in a red box, is a gift that I planned on giving to Marea later, but maybe now is the perfect time.

It’s nothing overly special, just a snow globe of the ocean, the light blue water allowing the tiny ceramic creatures inside to float about like they are swimming.

What makes it different is the bimac clinging to the rocky edge of the underwater reef—the very animal Marea confused me for on the night we first met.

Part of me hopes that whenever she looks at it, she thinks of me.

Wants me.

Needs me.

Fuck, I sound desperate.

Yanking down my pants, I pull my kotilo off, the hard length wiggling in my hand. I use my other to open the red box as the sexual cloud in my head clears.

Maneuvering out the snow globe, I drop my kotilo into the tissue paper and reseal the lid before getting some clear packaging tape.

I wrap it around the box twice for safe measure when I hear Marea calling my name. Setting it back down beside the snow globe, I fix my pants and head back to the main lab.

“Chaos! This is amazing! Look at this.”

She points to the screen, and I squint, surprised at how quickly she figured out the software when I know Pepperdine doesn’t have anything like this in their labs.
